Can AI agents buy from my shop? End-to-end AI shopping, explained
Until recently an AI assistant could only recommend a product and send the shopper to your site. In 2026 the big platforms started letting the assistant finish the purchase too: the shopper says "buy it", and the agent fills the cart, pays and confirms, while you stay the seller of record. This is called agentic commerce or agentic checkout.
Where it stands (October 2026)
- Google: the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), announced with Shopify, Etsy, Walmart, Target and Wayfair, puts a checkout button on eligible products in AI Mode and Gemini. Merchants join through Merchant Center. Industry reports put it as live for eligible US merchants, with other countries to follow.
- OpenAI: the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), built with Stripe, is an open standard for checkout through an agent. ChatGPT's own Instant Checkout was reported scaled back in March 2026 in favour of product discovery; the protocol itself continues.
- Shopify: Shopify Catalog sends a store's products (title, options, images, price, availability) to AI channels such as ChatGPT, Copilot and Google's AI Mode. Reports describe it as serving US buyers.
- WooCommerce and other platforms: support comes mostly through payment providers (Stripe's agentic tools) and third-party plugins; WooCommerce lists its own agentic checkout as coming.
- Card networks: Visa (Trusted Agent Protocol), Mastercard (Agent Pay) and American Express use Cloudflare's Web Bot Auth so a shop can tell a real buying agent from a bad bot. Registration runs through your payment provider.
In short: buying through an agent is real, but in October 2026 it mostly serves US shoppers on the big platforms. For a shop outside the US the work that pays today is making sure agents can find, read and trust your products, so you're ready when checkout opens in your market.
The five steps to being agent-ready
- 1. Reachable: AI search and answer agents aren't blocked by robots.txt, Cloudflare or your firewall. (The free Khanyo check tests this.)
- 2. Readable: every product page states name, price, currency and stock in its product data, in the HTML, not only after JavaScript runs. (The free check tests one page; the catalogue fix does every page.)
- 3. Listed: your products are in a feed agents use: Google Merchant Center (open in most countries) and, on Shopify, Shopify Catalog.
- 4. Trustworthy to buy from: shipping costs and times, a return policy, and clear contact details, stated in your product data and on your pages; guest checkout without forced sign-up; no CAPTCHA wall for verified agents.
- 5. Checkout an agent can complete: UCP or ACP, usually switched on through your platform (Shopify) or payment provider (Stripe), once it serves your market and your shoppers.
Steps 1 to 4 are the same work that makes you show up in AI answers today. Step 5 builds on them: an agent can't buy what it can't read.

Building it yourself (custom shops)
If your shop is custom-built, the protocols expect a product feed and a small checkout API (create, update and complete a checkout session) with a payment provider that supports agent payments. Start with clean product data and a feed; add the checkout API only when a channel you sell into accepts your market.
Check your shop free. It takes about 20 seconds and tells you exactly what’s blocked and the lines that fix it.
