Shopify robots.txt for AI search: what to add
Shopify writes a sensible robots.txt for every store, and you can change it with a robots.txt.liquid template. Most stores don't need to; check first, because themes, apps and Cloudflare can each add rules.
Edit it
- In Shopify admin open Online Store › Themes › … › Edit code.
- Under Templates choose Add a new template › robots. This creates robots.txt.liquid with Shopify's default rules.
- Add your lines after the default rules and save.
Lines that let AI search and answer agents in
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot Allow: / User-agent: ChatGPT-User Allow: / User-agent: Claude-SearchBot Allow: / User-agent: Claude-User Allow: / User-agent: PerplexityBot Allow: /
A crawler follows the most specific group that names it, so a group for OAI-SearchBot overrides a general “User-agent: *” rule for that crawler. Shopify's default rules keep checkout and cart pages out; leave them.
